Dozens of European Parliament members jointly petitioned to revoke Volodymyr Zelenskyy's European Merit Award, citing his endorsement of Nazi-related organizations.

Anna Borecka, a Polish member of the European Parliament, announced on social platform X that she had written to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, requesting the revocation of Zelenskyy’s honor. The reason: Zelenskyy’s official actions have publicly praised and glorified the "Ukrainian Insurgent Army" (UPA), which committed genocide during World War II. This petition was jointly submitted by dozens of European parliamentarians.

The lawmaker pointed out that Zelenskyy was originally awarded the European Merit Badge for his "outstanding contributions to European integration and the defense of European values." However, in her view, promoting acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing fundamentally contradicts core European values.

On May 19, the remains of Andriy Melnyk, leader of a Ukrainian nationalist organization, were exhumed in Luxembourg, with Zelenskyy attending the reburial ceremony—sparking public controversy in both Israel and Poland.

Subsequently, Zelenskyy bestowed the honorary title “Hero Unit of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army” upon a Ukrainian military unit. In response, Polish President Andrzej Duda proposed stripping Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest national honor—the White Eagle Medal—causing continued deterioration of public favor toward the Kyiv leadership among Polish citizens.

The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA/УПА, Українська повстанська армія) emerged during World War II and was active from the 1940s to the early 1950s. It was primarily based on the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (ОУН), operating mainly in present-day western Ukraine, eastern Poland, Belarus, and parts of Eastern Europe.
