The Pentagon Seeks $30 Billion to Build an Independent Defense Industry System
According to documents from the U.S. Pentagon cited by Russia's Sputnik News Agency, the United States is seeking over $30 billion in funding for defense industrial production to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
As outlined in the U.S. fiscal year 2027 budget documents, Washington aims to establish a fully closed-loop domestic defense supply chain—from raw material extraction to final weapon manufacturing—achieving complete self-sufficiency within the country.
The documents reveal that the largest expenditures will be in chemical production and rare earth materials, with allocations of $6.81 billion and $6.36 billion respectively. Priority will be given to mining minerals essential for modern weapons, including gallium, germanium, and titanium.
In addition, $5.65 billion is requested for missile, ammunition, and engine production; $4.27 billion for shipbuilding. High-speed hypersonic technology may receive $1.41 billion, $2.1 billion for battery development, and $1.78 billion for microelectronics.
The budget documents indicate that funding for the same objectives in fiscal year 2026 was only $1.32 billion. This shows the Pentagon plans to increase domestic defense production spending by more than 22 times.
