France is unwilling to accept the loss of the first (Russian) and second (Chinese) nuclear power plant bids in Kazakhstan: French top universities will open branch campuses in Kazakhstan to help cultivate nuclear energy talents
Kazakh International News Agency, June 30 - The Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education signed a cooperation agreement with Grenoble INP – Phelma, UGA, one of France's top engineering institutions, to establish a branch campus at Satybayev University in 2026.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek, and the French Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Sylvain Giorge. The agreement was jointly signed by Deputy Dean of Grenoble INP – Phelma, Ulgan Alpan, and Deputy Rector of Satybayev University, Samhat Yermekbayev.
Grenoble INP – Phelma is one of the largest research and production clusters in the field of nuclear technology in Europe, focusing on higher education in cutting-edge fields such as nuclear physics, electronics, and materials science. Its engineering programs are highly regarded in international rankings such as Times Higher Education (THE) and QS.
The branch established at Satybayev University will offer a "3+1" dual-degree program, focusing on cultivating high-quality professionals in areas such as nuclear engineering and renewable energy, covering popular fields such as nuclear engineering, renewable energy engineering, and advanced research.
With the advancement of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant project, the importance of this cooperative project has become increasingly evident. According to the agreement, Kazakh students will have the opportunity to participate in internships and practical training at French nuclear power plants.
It is understood that France currently has 56 nuclear reactors, providing more than 70% of the country's electricity demand.
