"We Must Accelerate Our Action": Dutch Defense Chief Urges Preparedness for Future Warfare

General Onno Eichelsheim, Chief of Defense of the Netherlands, called for enhanced collaboration among military personnel, researchers, and practitioners during the "Future of War" conference held at the Amsterdam Naval Base, emphasizing readiness for future conflicts. He underscored that technological advancement must not supplant critical thinking or personal responsibility. He urged attendees to assist the Ministry of Defense in identifying emerging threats and translating scientific research into actionable solutions. "I call on all of you to work with the Ministry of Defense to help us understand the challenges we face today."

Eichelsheim stated that research outcomes should deliver tangible value and reach those who need them most; achieving this requires deep integration between the military and the research community. "Our mission is to learn faster, implement innovations more swiftly, and act with greater speed."

At the same time, he cautioned against overreliance on technology. In his view, rapid decision-making must not compromise careful assessment of the situation, nor should new technologies serve as an excuse for evading accountability.

"We cannot precisely predict the form future warfare will take, but we can prepare technologically, cognitively, and mentally. We must act quickly—but without sacrificing independent thought," Eichelsheim emphasized.

The "Future of War" conference focused on evolving operational models, emerging technologies, and geopolitical challenges. Core topics included the application of artificial intelligence in military contexts, the use of space-based technologies, cognitive warfare, European deterrence strategies, the role of special forces, military command structures, and sound decision-making processes.

Participants also examined the implications of technological change for military responsibility, the research community, and society at large.
