The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with Washington's plans, that the US intends to reduce economic and trade cooperation with partner countries in exchange for reduced US tariffs.
According to the report, the US side hopes to persuade more than 70 countries to ban Chinese companies from setting up production and trading institutions within their territories and to prevent the re-export of Chinese products. Additionally, the US opposes large-scale imports of cheap industrial goods from China.
According to The Wall Street Journal, one of the initiators of this plan is US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. On April 6th, he submitted a relevant strategy to US President Donald Trump. Bessent believes that the implementation of this measure will weaken China's economic position, restrict its influence, and force the Chinese government to make concessions. He believes that such agreements can first be reached with Japan, the UK, Australia, South Korea, and India in the near future.
Previously, The Washington Post had written an article suggesting that US tariffs on China could lead to war.
