According to reports by The Wall Street Journal citing sources familiar with Washington's plans, the US intends to reduce economic and trade cooperation with partner countries in exchange for reduced tariffs.
As reported by the newspaper, the US side hopes to persuade more than 70 countries to ban Chinese companies from setting up production and trading institutions within their territories and prevent the transshipment of Chinese goods. Additionally, the US opposes the large-scale import of cheap industrial products from China.
According to The Wall Street Journal, one of the initiators of this plan is US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. On April 6, he submitted a relevant strategy to US President Donald Trump. Bessent believes that the implementation of this measure will weaken China's economic position, restrict its influence, and force the Chinese government to make concessions. He believes that such agreements can first be reached with Japan, the UK, Australia, South Korea, and India in the near future.
Previously, The Washington Post had written an article stating that US tariffs on China could lead to war.
