Recently, some self-media outlets have released news stating that "SMIC announced on July 6th that it has acquired the GPU IP division of British company Imagination Technologies through its wholly-owned subsidiary, and the transaction has been approved by regulatory authorities in China and the EU."

Imagination Technologies (Chinese name: Imagination Technology) responded on the evening of July 8th via its official WeChat account, stating that the relevant information is entirely fictional. According to the introduction, Imagination Technologies is a semiconductor company based in the UK, specializing in GPU and AI chip design, and is dedicated to the research and development of chip and software intellectual property (IP).

In its statement, Imagination Technologies stated that the company has not reached any form of agreement with any company regarding the sale of its GPU IP business. In response to the potential negative impact of this false information on the company's brand, confidence of partners, and business development, it has initiated relevant monitoring and evidence collection procedures, and reserves the right to pursue legal liability against the parties spreading false information.

Imagination Technologies also called upon the media and the public to "verify the sources when disseminating information, to avoid misreporting and misunderstanding."

Observation Net also noted that as of July 9th, as a listed company in both A and H shares, SMIC has not released any related acquisition announcement. At present, SMIC has not responded to these rumors.

Additionally, "Chip Intelligence" analysis pointed out that although Imagination Technologies is currently controlled by an overseas investment institution, Canyon Bridge, it is still a well-known British chip company with its headquarters in the UK. Any acquisition of the company would first require approval from the British government. However, under the current external environment, Chinese companies acquiring chip companies in Europe and the US will undoubtedly face various obstacles, and it is highly likely that such acquisitions will be rejected.

"Even if SMIC were to take control of Imagination Technologies from Canyon Bridge, it may not bring any benefit to its own business, and could even drag down Imagination Technologies being sanctioned."
