Korean Media: One Year After Implementing Reciprocal Tariffs, 63% of Americans Hold Negative Views!
On May 5, South Korean media outlet Newdaily published an article stating that after one year of U.S. President Trump's announcement to impose "reciprocal tariffs" on other countries, a public opinion survey revealed that the majority of Americans distrust his tariff policy.
According to a survey released by the Pew Research Center, 58% of respondents said they do not believe Trump can make correct judgments regarding U.S. trade policy, while only 41% expressed confidence.
Specifically concerning tariff policies, 63% of respondents indicated they do not trust Trump to make the right decisions, compared to just 36% who expressed confidence.
Last April 2, Trump claimed that other countries imposed tariffs and erected trade barriers against the United States, treating it unfairly in trade, and stated he would impose corresponding "mutual tariffs" based on each nation's actions.
However, concerns have grown that tariffs would increase costs for American businesses and consumers. Ultimately, in February this year, the Supreme Court ruled that reciprocal tariffs lack legal basis and are therefore unlawful.
Despite this, Trump has shown no sign of easing his tariff policy; instead, he is pushing forward with alternative tariff measures to replace reciprocal tariffs.
Public opinion on Trump’s trade policy varies significantly along political lines.
Among those supporting the Republican Party, 74% expressed confidence in Trump’s trade policy, while only 25% held negative views.
Among those leaning toward the Democratic Party, 88% held negative opinions, with only 12% expressing trust in Trump’s judgment.
Meanwhile, when asked which country benefits more from U.S.-China trade, 42% believed China gains more, 11% said the U.S. benefits more, and 24% believed both countries benefit equally.
In a similar survey conducted last spring, 46% believed China benefited more, while only 10% thought the U.S. benefited more.
