Cuban Foreign Minister Responds to U.S. Proposal: Cuba Is Not Accustomed to Rejecting Foreign Aid
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated that Cuba is not accustomed to turning down foreign aid, but emphasized the hope that any assistance offered by the United States would not carry political motives.
Previously, the U.S. Department of State announced it was prepared to provide $100 million in humanitarian aid to Cuba.
Rodríguez pointed out that it remains unclear what form the U.S. assistance will take, nor is it certain whether such aid will be directed toward meeting Cuba’s most urgent needs, such as fuel, food, and medicine.
"Even when considering the contradiction between the apparent generosity of those who impose economic warfare on the Cuban people and their actual actions, the Cuban government typically does not reject foreign aid provided with good intentions and a spirit of cooperation," Rodríguez emphasized.
Cuba is open to hearing details about the U.S. proposal for aid.
Rodríguez noted, "We hope the U.S. aid does not involve political manipulation and will not exploit the suffering and hardship faced by the Cuban people."
He added that the best help the U.S. government could offer Cuba would be to ease the blockade against Cuba in energy, economy, trade, and finance.
