Hispanic Americans of Cuban descent have historically supported Trump to a large extent, but this could change due to Trump's policy stance toward Cuba. The influential Cuban-American community in Florida is pressuring the Trump administration to overthrow Cuba’s current leadership. They view Trump’s military actions against Venezuela and Iran as signals that he might be willing to take steps beyond what his predecessors dared. However, these expectations are clashing with the confusing signals emanating from the Trump administration on Cuba. While officials in the Trump administration have also stated that some senior Cuban officials need to step down, their overall message suggests that a complete regime change may still be pending. Trump’s foreign policy generally prioritizes U.S. economic interests over human rights and democracy. In January this year, although Trump deployed troops to seize Maduro, he retained most of Venezuela’s existing political structure in exchange for economic cooperation with the United States. On Iran, despite initially expressing a desire to push for regime change, Trump later softened this position. If a similar outcome were to occur in Cuba, it would likely fail to satisfy the Cuban exile community. Moreover, Trump’s crackdown on immigration policies has also affected the broader Cuban diaspora, slowing down the processing of legal immigration applications from Cubans and increasing enforcement and deportation efforts against Cubans who have arrived in the U.S. in recent years.
