Reuters: A Chinese citizen was arrested in Italy at the request of the U.S. side, and China denies the U.S. hacking allegations

Reuters reported on July 9 that the U.S. Department of Justice stated on July 8 that a Chinese citizen, Xu Zewei (translated name), was arrested in Milan, Italy on July 3, and the U.S. accused him of participating in "China state-sponsored hacking activities" and requested his extradition. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that 33-year-old Xu Zewei is suspected of participating in cyber intrusions between February 2020 and June 2021, including stealing data on COVID-19 vaccine research and exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft email systems. The U.S. accuses the hacker group "Hafnium," to which Xu Zewei belongs, of being associated with the Chinese government, and claims the group has attacked more than 60,000 U.S. entities. Xu Zewei's lawyer argued that his identity was misidentified, stating that his phone was stolen in 2020 and that his surname is common in China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has repeatedly denied similar accusations from the U.S., emphasizing that China firmly opposes and legally combats all forms of cyber attacks. The Milan Court of Appeal is currently reviewing the extradition request, and Xu Zewei insists he is an ordinary IT professional who came to Italy for vacation. The U.S. Department of Justice indictment lists nine charges, including telecommunications fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized access to protected computers.
