African Critical Minerals: 60% Exported to China, by Mid-2025, Guinea Almost Approaches the Bauxite Export Volume of 2022
¬ Guinea exported 99.8 million tons of bauxite in the first half of 2025, approaching the total volume of 2022
¬ With the global supply leadership, exports increased by 36% year-on-year
¬ China remains the largest buyer, accounting for about 60% of Guinea's bauxite exports
As of June 30, 2025, Guinea has exported 99.8 million tons of bauxite, close to the annual total of 102.028 million tons in 2022. This comparison highlights that Guinea has rapidly developed into the world's largest bauxite supplier in recent years.
According to official data reported by Reuters, in the first half of 2025, Guinea's bauxite exports increased by 36% year-on-year. From 2022 to 2024, production increased by 37% to 141 million tons. In 2024, Guinea exported 145 million tons, becoming the leader in global bauxite exports. This surge is largely due to mining companies operating in the country accelerating their extraction rates, including AGB2A/SDM, which shipped 19.7 million tons in 2024, up from 6.18 million tons in 2023.
In 2024, the shipments from France's Société Générale de Banques (de Boke) increased by 13%, surpassing AGB2A/SDM. The exports from the Guinean Bauxite Company (CBG) also saw strong growth, ranking among the top three. Unlike countries such as Australia and China, which refine part or all of their bauxite locally, Guinea mainly exports raw ore. China remains the largest customer of Guinea, accounting for approximately 60% of its bauxite exports.
However, the Guinean government is working to develop its local alumina industry - an intermediate product between bauxite and aluminum. Conakry has recently strengthened its position, including halting operations after the delay of the UAE Global Aluminum Plant construction. Other projects are now continuing, such as the China-supported National Energy Investment Corporation, which started constructing its refinery in March 2025.
