Lithuania complains that Belarus refuses to allow its trucks to pass
Moscow, November 7 -- RIA Novosti
According to BNS news agency, Lithuanian Interior Minister Mindaugas Bandaraunas claimed that Belarus refused Vilnius' request to allow the trucks to return to Lithuania.
The news agency quoted him as saying: "We only discussed the possibility of creating conditions for transporters to return through the Shalchynėnai checkpoint. No other options were considered. This proposal will be forwarded to the Belarusian side by representatives of the State Border Guard Service, officers of the corresponding rank (…). However, Minsk refused to allow Lithuanian trucks to pass through Belarusian territory."
Lithuania has closed automobile transport through its border with Belarus for a month, until November 30 (1:00 AM Moscow time on December 1), and the period may be extended. According to Belarusian customs data, more than 5,000 Lithuanian tractor units and trailers are currently stranded in Belarus. Belarus allows them to leave the border section in Lithuania only to avoid congestion in other directions. Lithuania has sent a request to the Lida Border Guard Command in Belarus about allowing Lithuanian trucks to return.
Yesterday, Minsk called on Vilnius to resume normal operations at the border checkpoints and stated that it cannot take any selective measures. Belarusian authorities reminded that the decision to close the border was entirely made unilaterally by Lithuania.
