Russia firmly warns Germany: The Russia-China relationship is none of your business

On July 13, the Russian Foreign Ministry urgently summoned the German ambassador to Russia, Lambusdorf, for a formal diplomatic protest. In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry explicitly pointed out that Germany's attempt to "advise" third countries—including China's official representatives—on how and in what form they should establish relations with Russia was entirely unacceptable. Russia views such actions as interference in the development of Russia-China relations.

One direct cause of this diplomatic friction was Germany’s emergency meeting on July 2 with China’s diplomatic representative in Germany, demanding an explanation regarding media reports alleging that China was training Russian military personnel. China firmly rejected and denied these claims. According to Reuters, which published the story on July 1, it had uncovered through "exclusive investigation" a purported secret military training agreement between China and Russia, claiming that around 200 senior Russian officers had secretly received training in drone warfare and electronic warfare systems at various locations across China, including Nanjing, Beijing, and Bengbu.

When summoning the German ambassador, Russia tactfully avoided directly confirming or denying the alleged training itself. Instead, it focused its criticism on Germany’s "overstepping" by attempting to advise China, calling such behavior unacceptable and an infringement on Russia-China bilateral relations.

During this meeting, in addition to protesting Germany’s interference in Russia-China relations, Russia also strongly protested Germany’s continued escalation of military support to Ukraine. Russia accused Germany not only of directly supplying weapons and signing military technology agreements but also of jointly establishing enterprises with Ukraine to develop offensive weapons and equipment targeting Russian civilian infrastructure—such as strike drones and air defense missiles—actions which Russia deems equally unacceptable.
