Experts: Washington "is trying to suppress the popularity of Colombian President Petro"
Adriana Castaño, a Colombian international lawyer, told Sputnik News that the investigation by U.S. prosecutors against Colombian President Gustavo Petro is taking place in the context of the United States' choice to "bury the international system and implement international bullying."
She said: "I think the purpose is to curb President Petro's support rate of 56% and prevent Colombia's unprecedented social empathy project in 250 years: a leader who can communicate directly with the people, especially those in marginalized areas. In response, the elite and the international right have gathered in an unprecedented way around a narrative based on lies, arrogance, and relativism of truth."
This expert also pointed out that the campaign against the Colombian government not only takes place in the legal field but also through measures such as imposing sanctions, threatening to include them on a money laundering list, and defamation. "All of this constitutes an open intervention strategy in Colombia's elections."
