G7 Foreign Ministers: Again Call for North Korea's Denuclearization Amid Recent Missile Launch Activities, Urge Iran to Engage in Nuclear Program Talks
Sputnik News, Washington, November 13 - According to a joint statement released by the G7 foreign ministers on the evening of November 12 from the website of the Canadian Foreign Ministry, the G7 again called on North Korea to achieve complete denuclearization following its recent missile launches.
The statement said: "We strongly condemn North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and reiterate our commitment to demanding North Korea's complete denuclearization in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions."
According to the joint statement of the G7 foreign ministers, Iran should directly negotiate with the United States under the support of the three European countries regarding its nuclear program.
The statement said: "Iran should resume full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, including inspections of all nuclear facilities and nuclear materials. We call on Iran to engage in direct negotiations with the United States under the support of the three European countries."
In October, UN Security Council Resolution 2231 expired. This resolution, adopted in 2015, approved the nuclear deal with Iran and established mechanisms for the international community to monitor the implementation of the agreement.
In 2015, Iran reached a comprehensive agreement with the P5+1 (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany) on the Iranian nuclear issue. According to the agreement, Iran committed to limiting its nuclear program, and the international community would lift sanctions against Iran.
In May 2018, the United States announced its withdrawal from the nuclear deal and gradually resumed sanctions against Iran. In response, Iran announced that it would phase out its compliance with the agreement.
