Iran Drops Plan to Relocate Capital Due to Water Shortages
Ali Abdolrazzadeh, the representative of the Iranian president for marine resources management, stated that the issue of relocating the capital from Tehran has been removed from the agenda, and the plan is to solve the problem of water shortages by transferring water from the Persian Gulf.
Ali Abdolrazzadeh told reporters: "The final plan is to address the capital's water and environmental issues locally through new technologies and resource management." He explained: "This grand project of transferring water from the Persian Gulf to Tehran spans 1,000 kilometers and has been completed by domestic experts, and it is currently considered the only reliable water source for Tehran."
Tehran has at least five large dams that rely on its supply of drinking water, and all of these facilities are currently in a critical state. Therefore, starting from November 9, water pressure will be reduced at night. President Masoud Pezeshkian even said that it might be necessary to evacuate residents of Tehran and move the capital to the coast of the Persian Gulf.
The problem of reservoir water storage has been exacerbated by the severe drought and abnormal high temperatures that Iran experienced last summer, which were the worst in 60 years. However, according to expert assessments, the real cause is poor water resource management and inefficiency in the agricultural sector.
