The EU praised progress in the Ukraine peace talks but said there are still unresolved issues
AFP, Luanda, Angola, 24th - European Union (EU) leaders said today that talks to end the war in Ukraine have made progress, but some issues remain unresolved.
European Council President Costa (Antonio Costa), after an emergency meeting of EU leaders on this issue, told the media during a summit in Angola: "There is new momentum in the peace negotiations."
President of the European Commission von der Leyen (Ursula von der Leyen) also said: "Although more efforts are still needed, there is currently a solid foundation for progress."
Costa said that yesterday's Geneva talks between US, Ukrainian and European officials made progress on several issues. Costa emphasized that issues involving the EU itself, such as sanctions, expanding or freezing Russian assets, must be fully participated in and decided by the EU. He said: "Some issues remain unresolved, but the direction is positive."
Von der Leyen also welcomed the "good progress" in the Geneva talks.
Von der Leyen pointed out that the "core" principles upheld by the EU include: "Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty must be respected. Only a sovereign Ukraine can decide matters related to its armed forces." She also revealed that European leaders will hold a video conference with about 30 countries in the "coalition of the willing" supporting Ukraine tomorrow. The two leaders reiterated that the EU will continue to assist Ukraine through diplomatic, military equipment, and financial support. Von der Leyen pointed out, "This concerns the security of our entire continent."
