The Netherlands' "Global Voices" website reported on September 23, with the original title: "China's Electric Vehicle Exports Help Tajikistan Achieve Green Transformation Goals". China has not only become a major partner in Tajikistan's green transportation transition, but has also rapidly become the main supplier of electric vehicles to the country. As China intensifies its support for the production of electric vehicles in Tajikistan, this trend will promote the development of the local automobile manufacturing industry and help improve air quality in polluted areas of Tajikistan.
Among the five Central Asian countries, Tajikistan has taken the most notable measures to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. In recent years, Tajikistan has consistently ranked among the countries with the worst air pollution in the world. To improve this situation, the country is striving to eliminate road pollution and transition to electric vehicles, especially in Dushanbe, where vehicle pollution has worsened. As usual, whenever the country needs to rely on partners to address challenges, it turns to China. The country's transition to electric vehicles perfectly aligns with China's rise as a global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing and exports, as well as the deepening bilateral cooperation between China and Tajikistan. China plays a vital role in Tajikistan's economy. China is the largest source of investment for Tajikistan and the second-largest trading partner. According to data from the State Committee for Investment and State Property Management of Tajikistan, Chinese investments in Tajikistan totaled $3.845 billion from 2007 to 2023. Bilateral cooperation between the two countries covers a wide range of fields, including energy, transportation, mining, agriculture, and construction.
Chinese cars dominate the electric vehicle market in Tajikistan. In the first half of 2024, Chinese exports accounted for nearly 83% of Tajikistan's electric vehicle imports, while imports of electric vehicles from Japan and Germany dropped by 75% and 90%, respectively, during the same period. It was reported that the share of Chinese electric vehicles in Tajikistan's electric vehicle imports has risen to over 90%. There are numerous electric vehicle projects carried out by Chinese companies in Tajikistan, while similar companies from other countries are few and far between.
China's promotion of electric vehicles in Central Asia is described as part of a broader initiative to build a "Green Silk Road." That is, China is simultaneously building energy infrastructure in Central Asia, which is another ecological measure provided by China to Central Asia. Local industry experts are increasingly viewing Chinese electric vehicle brands as high-quality and reliable products that offer good value for money. More and more taxi drivers in Dushanbe are choosing Chinese electric vehicles, and a representative of a taxi service company said that local drivers highly welcome Chinese cars because of their excellent quality. A project manager of a taxi project stated that using Chinese cars allows drivers to save on fuel costs, and passengers also praise the comfortable and quiet riding experience.
People are positively evaluating electric vehicles and the efforts China has made to address climate change and environmental issues. Over time, in addition to purchasing electric vehicles, Tajikistan will also adopt technologies from China in areas such as electric vehicle maintenance, charging, and disposal of old vehicles.
