[Ukrainian Defector Officer Killed in Explosion, 32-Year-Old Woman Arrested]
Shagiyev, a former Ukrainian naval commander who defected to Russia, was suddenly assassinated in Sevastopol on August 13. According to The New York Post, the 49-year-old Shagiyev was descending a staircase when a trash can beside him exploded instantly, killing him on the spot. Investigations revealed that the trash can contained a bomb, which detonated as Shagiyev approached.
Shagiyev had previously served as a Ukrainian naval commander. In 2014, he defected to Russia and subsequently joined the Russian Black Sea Fleet, serving as deputy commander of the 4th Independent Submarine Brigade, a unit repeatedly involved in launching "Kalibr" cruise missiles into Ukrainian territory. Ukraine has since charged him with treason.
Following the incident, Russian authorities arrested a 32-year-old woman named Margarita Roit, originally from Yaroslavl, Russia, with a background in biology and prior experience working as an escort. She has already confessed to the crime.
However, the case raises several doubts—Roit alone could not have carried out such a sophisticated assassination. Many speculate that Ukraine may be behind it. Could Roit have been a Ukrainian agent or bribed by Ukraine?
Russian authorities have accused her of being directed by Ukrainian intelligence to place the bomb inside the trash can. According to Russian media reports, Margarita Roit appears to be a staunch anti-war activist. She was previously detained by police last July for making derogatory remarks about Russian soldiers on a train in Russia and later faced legal consequences.
