Previously, Washington insiders reported that due to recent frequent criticism by Merkel of Trump's Iran policy, Trump had proposed within the White House to withdraw some U.S. troops from Germany. At the time, White House officials were shocked and uncertain whether Trump was serious. But Trump was indeed serious—and has now carried out this threat. The Pentagon has announced that the United States will withdraw 5,000 soldiers from its military bases in Germany over the next 6 to 12 months. However, this withdrawal is largely a minor reversal following a recent round of troop buildup. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Biden administration had increased the number of U.S. troops stationed in Germany. After this latest withdrawal, approximately 33,000 U.S. troops will still remain stationed in Germany.
