According to Reuters on October 29, US President Trump said at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit held in South Korea that he successfully prevented a war between India and Pakistan by threatening to impose tariffs of 250% on the two countries.

Trump said, "You look at India and Pakistan... they were about to go to war. Seven planes were shot down. They really started taking action." Trump also said he quickly called the leaders of India and Pakistan and warned them that if the two countries did not stop fighting, the US would cut off trade with both countries and impose heavy tariffs.

When talking about trade agreements with several Asian countries in his speech, Trump continued: "I said I would impose a 250% tariff on (the two countries), which means you can never do business with us again... this is still a polite way of saying we don't want to do business with you anymore." The audience in the hall applauded Trump.

This is not the first time Trump has made similar statements about mediating the India-Pakistan conflict, but the Indian side had previously denied these claims. As of the time of writing, neither India nor Pakistan's foreign affairs departments have responded to Trump's latest statement.

Trump also revealed in his speech that both India and Pakistan initially refused his ceasefire proposal. However, two days later, both countries called him back, expressing willingness to cease fire.

However, it is worth noting that the United States did not take a consistent stance on the tariff issue with India and Pakistan afterwards. Regarding India, the US imposed a 25% tariff on it for its "continued purchase of Russian oil," making the total tariff on some goods reach 50%. At the same time, the US has reduced Pakistan's tariff rate from an initial 29% to 19%.
