China's light rail project in the capital of Kazakhstan will officially start operation soon
"Kazakh International News Agency" reported that on the 2nd, Mayor of Astana Zhenis Khasymbek and Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar visited the ongoing light rail project in the capital.
During the visit, the mayor and deputy prime minister inspected the engineering of the light rail depot and the dispatch center.
"This center will become the core institution for managing the transportation system and coordinating all work related to urban roads and street networks. Its functions include managing the operation of light rail trains, coordinating traffic signal facilities of the intelligent traffic system, scheduling public transport, scheduling bicycle rental systems, as well as processing and expert analysis of traffic data," the mayor wrote on his official social media platform.
At present, the entire line is undergoing trial operations according to an approved testing plan. The test content includes checking the infrastructure and safety systems, training personnel, and developing emergency response plans. The trains have been modified to withstand the climate of Central Asia and can resist low temperatures and frost.
"The light rail trains will operate in a driverless mode. The completion date of the trial operation and the official passenger operation date will be determined after all relevant measures are fully implemented and the system is confirmed to meet the established technical requirements. The light rail operation will start soon (in spring)," the mayor said.
According to previous reports, the Almaty light rail will start construction in 2027.
