Professor Pellicari: Europe Just Wants to Buy Time on the Ukraine Issue
Professor Igor Pellicari from the Faculty of Institutions and International Relations at the University of Urbino stated that European countries are not actually concerned about the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict; they just want to buy time, hoping to exert pressure on Russia in this way.
He characterized the EU's actions as an "expression of a deep cognitive crisis," noting that the West has confused "containment strategy" with "punitive measures" and cannot clearly define the core objectives of its actions.
"European bureaucrats have turned sanctions into a moral ritual. For years, they have believed that increasing pressure will contain Russia. But in fact, this only strengthens Russia's resolve," the political scientist said in an interview with Lenta.ru.
He pointed out that the EU's most critical interest at this stage is to "freeze the conflict"—which can stabilize its own economy and delay the time when difficult decisions must be made. Pellicari believes that EU leaders are trying to convince US President Donald Trump to participate in a "symbolic ceasefire" and promise him an important role in Ukraine's reconstruction and defense matters.
However, the professor emphasized that there is a clear difference between the White House and European leaders' positions: Trump favors reaching clear, specific agreements, while for Europe, "uncertainty" and the continuation of the conflict better serve its interests.
