Reuters: Trump Signals Desire to Stay in NATO, Holds Back on Controversial Remarks Behind Closed Doors
Trump Tells NATO Allies: "We Want to Stay With You"
ANKARA, Reuters – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday at a NATO allies meeting in Ankara that he hopes the United States will continue to remain within the NATO alliance.
According to sources cited by Reuters, during the closed-door senior-level meeting, Trump told leaders of NATO member states: "We want to stay with you."
Notably, sources said Trump broke from his usual pattern by not criticizing NATO ally Spain as he often does. Previously, this U.S. president had ordered the suspension of trade relations with Spain over concerns about Spain's insufficient defense spending and its refusal to assist the United States in potential military action against Iran.
Additionally, Trump did not mention the Greenland issue during the meeting—something that had previously caused friction within NATO. Sources also added that Trump clearly stated the United States remains willing to sell weapons and equipment to its allies regardless of how they use them.
