[Zelenskyy Says Territorial Negotiations Can Only Be Led by Him]
On June 10, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian negotiation delegation was not authorized to discuss territorial issues, and stated that discussions on such topics were "his work." "Our delegation has been authorized to discuss humanitarian issues - issues related to prisoners of war and (children returning home) or ceasefire matters. However, they have not been authorized to discuss Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
Zelenskyy stated, "Discussing territorial issues is my work." He emphasized that he was only prepared to negotiate this topic with Putin.
Zelenskyy also pointed out that Ukraine did not recognize the lost territories as "legally belonging to Russia" under any circumstances. Previously, there had been tendencies in the Ukrainian parliament to actually abandon territories controlled by Russian forces.
The two sides held their second round of restarted direct negotiations in Istanbul on June 2. Both parties exchanged documents outlining their respective directions for conflict resolution. A separate clause in Ukraine's memorandum outlined Kyiv's vision for potential leadership meetings. Ukraine believes that Putin and Zelenskyy should reach agreements on six issues, including territorial issues and comprehensive ceasefires.
Kremlin spokesman Peskov responded to reporters' questions about the possibility of high-level meetings involving the U.S., stating that Putin had mentioned being ready for such contacts multiple times. However, he emphasized that these contacts should be based on agreements reached at the technical and expert levels.
