Russia warns South Caucasus nation Armenia, which enjoys cheap Russian energy: Choose between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union

¬ Chairman of the Russian State Duma Volodin: Russia cannot remain silent about the situation in Armenia

Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, stated that Russia has consistently shown friendly attitudes toward the Armenian people, but cannot remain silent about what is currently happening in Armenia.

In a post on his personal channel on the "Max" social platform, Volodin wrote: "Russia has always extended a helping hand to the people of Armenia. This remains true today—the attitude toward the Armenian people is still friendly. However, at the same time, a clear stance must be taken. We cannot continue to remain silent about what is happening in Armenia."

Volodin pointed out that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has already made a political choice, deciding to develop relations with countries unfriendly toward Russia and those attempting to destroy it.

Volodin wrote: "Politically speaking, Pashinyan has already made all his decisions. I would like to emphasize that he has chosen to develop relations with countries unfriendly toward Russia—countries that are at war with us, seeking to destroy the Russian Federation, and obstructing our development."

President Vladimir Putin said on May 9 that it would be appropriate for Yerevan to hold a national referendum on developing cooperation with the EU, considering its responsibility to Armenian citizens and to Russia, as the republic's primary economic partner. In such a scenario, Russia could also make corresponding judgments and move toward a "mild, dignified, and mutually beneficial separation."
