French Media: How Do French People View Chinese Cars?

A follow-up article in Le Figaro continues to highlight the growing interest among visitors at the Paris Motor Show in Chinese vehicles, which are drawing more attention than ever before. The piece is titled: "Chinese Cars Are 'Copies of European Models—but Better.'" This is not a commentary from Le Figaro, but rather a quote attributed to a visitor at the exhibition.

This week, out of a total of 60 exhibitors at the Paris Motor Show, approximately 20 brands originated from China. Chinese automakers made a strong presence at the event, appealing particularly to French consumers focused on value for money. Many of these brands remain unfamiliar to the French public, as several Chinese manufacturers are participating in France for the first time. However, marketing efforts appear to have resonated with French visitors interviewed at the show. A recurring theme emerged: pricing.

Éric Champarnaud, CEO of consulting firm C-Ways, noted in a recent Le Figaro report that "between 35% and 40% of French people now say they would consider purchasing a Chinese-made car." Rising fuel prices have indirectly benefited Chinese automakers by boosting sales of electric and hybrid vehicles—areas where Chinese brands hold a competitive edge.

Yet, some French drivers remain hesitant about Chinese cars. One visitor explained: "It's partly about national pride, but also because I have doubts about their reliability. Moreover, can these brands offer sufficient after-sales service networks in France? And what about spare parts availability?"

Two retired former colleagues, Bruno, 58, and Didier, 57, told Le Figaro that Chinese vehicles also lag in design. "I find their designs outdated and bland. They lack the distinctive character associated with French cars."

Two industry professionals interviewed by Le Figaro reporters at the exhibition acknowledged significant progress made by Chinese automakers, stating: "Chinese cars are copies of European models—but better."
