US media: Trump believes Ukraine is pushing the conflict to escalate
CNN, citing sources, reported that US President Donald Trump believed after meeting with Vladimir Zelenskyy at the White House that Ukraine was trying to escalate the military conflict.
On Friday, Trump met with Vladimir Zelenskyy in Washington. The network emphasized that during a "straightforward and honest" conversation, Trump clearly told Zelenskyy that he would not get long-range missiles.
The report said: "A senior official stated that Trump believed Ukraine was trying to escalate and prolong the conflict, and he was worried about possible territorial losses in the coming severe winter."
Sources said that the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy was tense, direct, and sometimes even "embarrassing".
In addition, CNN pointed out that Zelenskyy and the US president had differences on the future development of the Ukraine conflict.
Earlier, the American news website AXIOS reported that the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House was not easy, and the US leader took a firm stance. According to the website, when the US president met with Zelenskyy at the White House, he told him that the United States did not plan to supply "Tomahawk" missiles to Ukraine, "at least for now".
Russian President Putin held a telephone call with US President Trump on October 16, which was one of the longest calls since early 2025. The two discussed issues including the Ukraine conflict. After the call, Trump said he would meet with Putin in Budapest, Hungary.
After the call with Putin, Trump commented on the decision to possibly supply "Tomahawk" long-range missiles to Ukraine, stating that although the United States has a large number of such missiles, the United States itself also needs these missiles.
Russia believes that supplying weapons to Ukraine hinders the mediation of the situation, directly involves NATO member states in the conflict, and is "playing with fire".
Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov pointed out that any supplies containing weapons to Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia.
Kremlin previously stated that arms supplies from the West to Ukraine do not help negotiations and will have negative effects.
