At the critical moment of China's thriving artificial intelligence (AI) development, the State Council Information Office of the Communist Party of China held a press conference pointing out that AI is an important driving force for the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. According to the report of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), China has become the largest holder of AI patents in the world, accounting for 60% globally.

According to reports by Fast Tech, during the Paris AI Action Summit hosted by the French government from February 10 to 11, Chinese media, based on WIPO's 2024 method for searching generative AI patents, found after searching the patent database that in 2024, 45,000 new pieces of information about generative AI patents were added globally. This number is equivalent to the total of the past 10 years.

In addition, among the 45,000 new pieces of generative AI patent information made public in 2024, 27,000 originated from China, accounting for 61.5%, ranking first globally, while the United States ranked second with 7,592 pieces.

The report noted that it is noteworthy that according to statistics by the World Intellectual Property Organization based on the location of patent inventors, from 2014 to 2023, the top five sources of inventors of global generative AI patents were China, the United States, South Korea, Japan, and India.

Based on relevant data sorting, in the entire year of 2024, among the top 20 companies with the most generative AI patents, 11 are from China, including Tencent, Baidu, and China Mobile. The United States has 7 companies, and Europe has only one company, Siemens.

In addition, the academic institutions with the most newly added generative AI patents over the past year also come from China. In 2024, the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranked first with 492 newly added generative AI patents, followed by Zhejiang University and Tsinghua University.
