April 11, Editor Shi Zhengcheng from the Financial Media Union - The U.S. Space Force issued a statement on Thursday, removing Colonel Suzanne Meyers, commander of the Thule Air Base, due to "questions about her leadership capabilities." This base is located in Thule, an autonomous territory of Denmark known as Greenland, and is also a place President Trump has had his eye on attempting to annex.

Hours before the dismissal order was announced, reports indicated that after Vice President Vance's unexpected visit to Greenland in late March, Colonel Meyers sent an internal email expressing disagreement with Vance's remarks.

In the statement, the U.S. military emphasized that "commanders must adhere to behavioral standards, particularly maintaining nonpartisanship while on duty." In contrast, U.S. Department of Defense Chief Spokesperson Sean Parnell bluntly stated that the Department of Defense will not tolerate any actions that undermine the command chain or disrupt former President Trump's agenda.

The Thule Air Base is a critical component of the U.S. missile defense system and, due to its location in the Arctic, lies on the shortest path for missiles hypothetically launched by Russia toward the United States. Colonel Meyers took command of the base last July.

What happened?

On March 28, without prior invitation, Vance led a delegation including National Security Advisor Waltz and Energy Secretary Wright to visit Greenland. Since this trip was highly unpopular locally, they could only make a symbolic short visit to the U.S. Thule Air Base on the island.

Even so, Vance still made provocative comments to the local residents. According to CCTV reports, Vance said that Denmark had not done enough for the people of Greenland, and it would be better protected under the U.S. umbrella than by Denmark.

According to U.S. media reports, days after Vance's visit, Colonel Meyers sent an email to all staff clearly expressing her disagreement with Vance's remarks.

In her letter, she wrote: "I do not claim to understand current politics, but I am certain that the concerns expressed by Vice President Vance on Friday do not represent the stance of the Thule Air Base."

It was reported that Colonel Meyers' email was sent to all military personnel and civilian staff at the base, including some from Canada and Denmark. The U.S. Space Force confirmed the authenticity of the email.

In her letter, Meyers also mentioned that "I spent the entire weekend reflecting on Vice President Vance's visit – the actions taken, words spoken, and the impact they surely had on each of you."

In her letter, she added: "I promise that as long as I have the privilege to lead this base, all flags will proudly fly together."

A few hours after this report was released, the U.S. military announced Meyers' dismissal.

Trump's Extensive Replacements of Military Officers

Given the recent trend of the Trump administration frequently replacing military commanders, Colonel Meyers' swift dismissal came as no surprise.

In February's clean-up operation, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown Jr., Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force Lieutenant General James Slaff, as well as the highest legal advisors of the Navy, Army, and Air Force were all dismissed.

Last week, Trump surprisingly removed General Timothy Howe, Director of the National Security Agency and Commander of the U.S. Cyber Command. According to media reports, Trump met with far-right activist Laura Loomer the day before issuing the dismissal order, who urged him to remove General Howe.

Laura Loomer later publicly stated that General Howe was dismissed because he was "disloyal" to Trump, and another reason was that his appointment was "endorsed" by former Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley.

Due to being considered "disloyal" to Trump, General Milley, who retired in 2023, had his security detail and security clearance revoked in January. According to previous reports, Trump attempted to deploy troops to suppress Black protests domestically during his first term but abandoned the plan after being dissuaded by General Milley.
