Danish Prime Minister Visits Greenland, Says Greenland Belongs to Greenlanders

Reuters and AP reported that Frederiksen began a three-day visit to Greenland on the 2nd. After arriving at the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, she told the media, "The U.S. will not take over Greenland; Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders."

The new leader of the Greenlandic Autonomous Government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, welcomed Frederiksen's visit and said that Denmark is "Greenland's closest partner." Frederiksen promised to do her utmost to ensure equal rights for Greenlanders and Danes within Denmark.

On March 28th, U.S. Vice President Vance led a delegation to visit the U.S. military base in northern Greenland and criticized Denmark for failing to properly defend the island's security, suggesting that the U.S. should better protect this strategically significant territory.

In response, Frederiksen said that Greenlanders should decide their own future and described Vance's description of Denmark as "unfair."

Nielsen also stated on social media that Greenland would resist any attempts by the U.S. to annex the territory.

Greenland, located in northeastern North America, is the largest island in the world. The island is an autonomous Danish territory with extensive self-governing powers, while defense and foreign affairs are managed by the Danish government. Since taking office earlier this year, U.S. President Trump has repeatedly claimed to obtain Greenland, which was condemned and opposed by Denmark and Greenland residents.
