Korean media: Tesla and BYD target Japan's electric vehicle market, significantly expanding stores!

On August 26, the Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that the representative electric vehicle companies of the United States and China, Tesla and BYD, are significantly expanding their stores in Japan.

Tesla plans to increase the number of stores in Japan from the current 23 to 30 this year, and expand to 50 by the end of next year. The new stores to be opened in the future will all be directly operated stores, mostly located within large commercial facilities.

Tesla previously mainly sold cars online, but the company has changed its strategy, planning to increase customer interaction through physical stores. It is reported that Tesla plans to open 100 physical stores in Japan in the long term.

In addition, Tesla also plans to expand its approximately 130 fast charging facilities in Japan, and provide separate adapters to enable the use of local Japanese charging equipment.

"The Nikkei" reported that "Tesla focuses on sales in Japan because sales in Europe, the United States, and China have been sluggish," and stated that Tesla's sales in Japan reached 4,600 units in the first half of this year, an increase of about 70% compared to the same period last year.

Tesla plans to surpass Mercedes-Benz, which is currently the top-selling imported car brand in Japan, by around 2027 by actively entering the Japanese market. Mercedes-Benz sold 53,195 vehicles in Japan last year.

On the other hand, BYD also plans to increase the number of stores from 63 to 100 this year.

The adoption rate of electric vehicles in Japan remains relatively low, with pure electric vehicle sales reaching 27,321 units in the first half of the year, a decrease of 7% compared to the same period last year.

"The Nikkei" predicts that "the wave of electric vehicles will eventually sweep Japan," as the next-generation electric vehicles from Japanese companies such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan will be launched next year.

"The Nikkei" said that if Japanese companies do not accelerate the development of electric vehicles, their market share will be taken away by American and Chinese companies.
