South Korean media: BYD's sales surge, the gap with Tesla is further widening!
On August 21, South Korean media "Today Digital" published an article stating that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has surpassed Tesla, becoming the fastest-growing company in the global electric vehicle market.
According to the electric vehicle media CleanTechnica, BYD's electric vehicle sales in Q2 2025 were 1,127,173 units, far exceeding Tesla's 384,122 units. In the first half of this year, Tesla's sales were approximately 700,000 units, while BYD's sales exceeded 2 million units. BYD's quarterly sales growth exceeded that of Tesla, and its annual growth rate also surpassed that of Tesla.
BYD's pure electric vehicle sales also saw a significant increase. In Q2 2025, BYD sold 642,664 pure electric vehicles, far exceeding Tesla's sales.
The sales gap between the two companies is widening. Especially, BYD's quarterly sales growth rate is much faster than Tesla's, and its annual growth rate also outperforms Tesla.
Industry experts analyze that BYD's active expansion of production combined with strong demand in China has further widened the gap with Tesla. On the other hand, Tesla has encountered difficulties in expanding its market share and recently reduced the production of Model S and Model X. Since the fourth quarter of 2023, Tesla's pure electric vehicle sales have steadily increased, but they have not yet reached the growth rate of BYD.
