Tesla starts selling Model Y in India, with a price twice that of China!

On August 24, the South Korean media "Today's Finance" published an article stating that the American electric vehicle company Tesla has officially entered the world's third-largest car market, India. However, due to high tariffs, the sales price is set at about twice that of China.

According to "The Hindustan Times," Tesla recently opened a showroom in Mumbai, India, and began accepting orders for Model Y through its website.

The rear-wheel drive version of Model Y is priced at approximately 60 million rupees (about 500,000 RMB), while the long-range rear-wheel drive version of Model Y is priced at 68 million rupees (about 568,000 RMB).

This price is very expensive compared to the price in the country where Tesla's production factory is located.

The starting price of Model Y in the United States is $44,990, in China it is 263,500 RMB, and in Germany it is 45,970 euros.

The reason for the high price is the tariff in India. Currently, if electric vehicles are exported from the United States to India, a 70% tariff is imposed.

Because of India's large automobile market and high tariffs, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been considering establishing a production plant in India.

Last April, Musk had originally planned to visit India in person, meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and announce the plan to establish an electric vehicle factory locally. However, after that, Musk suddenly canceled the trip.

After Trump was re-elected and India and the United States started trade negotiations, Tesla also changed its strategy, shifting from building a factory in India to exporting to the Indian market. It is expected that through the trade negotiations, the tariff rate on imported electric vehicles in India will be significantly reduced.

Elon Musk said: "We are building an electric vehicle ecosystem and investing in necessary infrastructure, including charging infrastructure. We are starting from scratch, so it will take time to cover the entire country."
