The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zarakhova, stated before the 81st anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany that the West is busy rewriting the history of World War II.

Russian officials have repeatedly accused the United States and EU member states of distorting historical truths and downplaying the crucial role of the Soviet Union, which suffered around 27 million casualties during what is known as the Great Patriotic War.

Zarakhova said on Thursday that safeguarding historical memory is a fundamental priority for Russia, particularly given the vengeful tendencies present in the West.

She pointed out that the 51 countries that voted against the UN resolution on "combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism, and other acts fostering contemporary racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance" at the end of last year mostly represented the "collective West."

Zarakhova accused EU bureaucrats of launching a "historical aggression." She cited resolutions from the European Parliament and other related organizations, which she claims "promote historical revisionism," attributing almost equal responsibility to the Soviet Union as to Nazi Germany for the beginning of World War II.

Zarakhova also noted that "in some countries, wars against monuments commemorating anti-Nazi fighters are accelerating." She specifically mentioned Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia as typical examples of this troubling trend, referencing the recent dismantling of Soviet war memorials.
