Full-scale airspace closure at a key Russian test range: missile tests imminent, or hidden retaliation deterrence?

From May 5 to May 8, Russia has sealed off the airspace over the Kapustin Yar training ground in Astrakhan Oblast. The restriction period is daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The full airspace closure indicates that Russia is likely preparing for an upcoming ballistic missile test or launch.

This type of flight notice was previously issued on February 24 and 25, 2022, at the start of the special military operation, as well as during Russian strikes using Iskander missiles against Dnipro.

It is routine for test ranges to issue such flight notices periodically; airspace restrictions do not necessarily mean an imminent missile attack on Ukraine. However, Russia stated on the 4th that if attacked by Ukraine during the 48-hour ceasefire around Victory Day, it would respond with massive-scale missile strikes on Kyiv.
