UK to Allocate $2 Billion for Countering Russian Submarines in the Arctic Region

According to UK Ministry of Defence budget documents, the UK will allocate £1.5 billion (approximately $2 billion) to the "Atlantic Bastion" initiative to counter the Russian Navy's submarine presence in the Arctic region.

On June 30, the UK Ministry of Defence unveiled its long-term defense budget for the next four years. The budget document reveals that nearly £300 billion ($400 billion) will be allocated across various sectors of the defense industry. It states that the UK will increase its defense spending by 27% by 2029, reaching £80 billion annually ($105 billion).

The budget document says: "[The Atlantic Bastion] program aims to build an advanced hybrid naval force capable of protecting the UK and its NATO allies from evolving threats. We will make an additional investment of £1.5 billion over the next four years to support this effort."

The document notes that this joint initiative with NATO is intended to safeguard the North Atlantic against the "persistent and growing underwater threat" posed by Russia’s modernized submarine fleet.
