U.S. Pentagon Officials First Witness Laser and Microwave Weapon Tests
According to the Axios website, senior U.S. Pentagon officials have for the first time personally visited a test site in New Mexico to observe demonstrations of laser and microwave weapons.
The U.S. fiscal year 2027 budget proposal has already allocated over $2 billion for research and development in this field.
The report states: "Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Technical Director Emil Michael watched live demonstrations of laser and microwave weapons in New Mexico on Tuesday."
The report notes that such weapons are seen as relatively low-cost solutions for countering drones, but have not yet been widely deployed.
According to sources cited by Axios, Pentagon leadership evaluated the 20-kilowatt "Locust" directed energy mobile system developed by Aero Environment. During testing, the "Locust" system successfully shot down multiple drones on the flight deck of the USS George H.W. Bush.
President Donald Trump previously expressed his desire to equip new battleships with nuclear and non-nuclear missiles, electromagnetic railguns, conventional artillery, and also laser weapons.
