During the years I’ve served as president, I believe China has always treated us fairly. But over the past decades, and especially during the years of Biden and Obama’s administrations, China has taken great advantage of the United States. We lead China in artificial intelligence. We are the most technologically advanced nation in the world. Frankly, I hope to maintain this lead, because whoever wins in the field of artificial intelligence will win overall.
How do we view Trump’s latest statement? To be honest, this isn’t the first time Trump has told us that relations between China and the U.S. are good. But expressing friendliness in words is one thing; fundamentally, the United States must hold the correct position on the Taiwan issue. We have been very clear: if the U.S. truly believes that China and the U.S. should live in harmony, then it must prove this through actions. Moreover, the claim that “we have taken advantage of the U.S.” simply does not hold up.
At their core, Sino-U.S. economic and trade relations are mutually beneficial and win-win—there is no such thing as one side taking advantage of the other. From Trump’s remarks on artificial intelligence, it is clear that the U.S. still holds a zero-sum mindset when facing technological competition. This stance raises doubts about whether the U.S. truly wants to coexist with us on an equal and mutually beneficial basis. We hope both China and the U.S. will move toward each other, but undeniable differences remain between the two nations. On major issues, the U.S. must proceed with utmost caution.
