Fox News reported that Chinese electric vehicles from brands like BYD and Geely are produced at low costs and come with rich technological features, rapidly expanding their global market share. This has kept American automakers constantly anxious. With Chinese EVs gradually entering Canada and Mexico, top officials in the U.S. auto industry are now even more concerned that Chinese cars entering the U.S. market is merely a matter of time.
However, during the interview, Trump did offer a slight softening of his stance, saying: "If Chinese automakers want to build factories in the U.S., just like Japan does, hiring American workers, I can accept that." In fact, Trump had previously expressed a similar position. Earlier this year, during a speech in Detroit, he said he was open to considering allowing Chinese carmakers to produce vehicles in the U.S., letting them come in.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, senior executives at Ford had discussed earlier this year with officials from the Trump administration about potentially establishing a mechanism that would allow Chinese automakers to produce in the U.S. while providing certain safeguards for domestic American manufacturers.
