Korean Media: Tesla Sold Only 600 Vehicles in India in Over a Month!

On September 4, the Korean media outlet "Edaily" published an article stating that Tesla, with its ambitious plan to enter the world's third-largest automobile market, India, has sold only slightly more than 600 vehicles in one and a half months. This weak sales performance contradicts Tesla's expectations, raising doubts about its global growth prospects.

Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that since Tesla electric vehicles were launched in India in mid-July, they have received approximately 600 orders. Considering Tesla's goal of selling 2,500 cars in India this year, this performance is disappointing.

The indifferent response from the Indian market coincides with a slowdown in Tesla's sales in the United States and Chinese markets. Affected by the slowing demand, Tesla's sales fell by 13% year-on-year in the last quarter, marking the second consecutive year of decline.

Analysts said that the low sales in the Indian market are related to the 50% tariff imposed by the United States on India. High tariffs have intensified the public's aversion to American brands in India.

Tesla had hoped that the Trump administration and India would lower import tariffs during trade negotiations, but this seems to be progressing poorly. Since President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian export products over India's purchase of Russian oil, the conflict between the two countries has further deepened.

Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai on March 15, officially entering the Indian market.

Tesla has attempted multiple times to enter the Indian market, but ultimately shifted its focus to selling imported cars rather than building production facilities. For years, the Indian government has been formulating policies to attract electric vehicle factories and encourage Tesla to produce locally. In response to the Indian government's invitation, Musk had planned to visit India and announce an investment plan worth $2 billion to $3 billion, but this visit was suddenly canceled.

Tesla has formally stated that it has no interest in building a factory in India. Previously, US President Trump opposed it, saying that it would be unfair to the US if Tesla built a factory in India to avoid India's tariffs.
