Belgian Foreign Minister: Never Accept U.S. Violation of Denmark's Territorial Integrity
Belgium's Foreign Minister Maxime Vivas said in an interview with the Belgian French-speaking TV station RTBF in Washington that Belgium will never tolerate any form of U.S. violation of Denmark's territorial integrity in Greenland.
Vivas said, "This morning I had a very clear discussion with the U.S. Deputy Secretary on this issue (Greenland issue): under no circumstances should any slight violation of the territorial integrity of any European country be allowed or tolerated. Moreover, using such radical and hostile language between NATO allies is meaningless."
He added that if the U.S. openly expresses a sense of threat from the Northern Hemisphere, Belgium can understand and accept this position, but believes that dialogue must take place between Europe, Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. to jointly address these threats.
Vivas concluded, "But obviously, neither demonstrating military might nor issuing any threats can find a real solution."
