Russian Diamond Company: Countries Not Involving Politics May Replace Belgium as the Global Diamond Center

RIA Novosti, Moscow - Sergei Takhiev, head of the finance department of Rosarz, one of the world's largest diamond mining and processing companies, told RIA Novosti that countries oriented towards economic laws rather than politics have the opportunity to replace Belgium as the new global diamond trade center.

Takhiev said in response to a question that theoretically, countries that are open and make decisions based on economic laws and supply and demand rather than political situations have the potential to become the new center. The new global diamond trade center may appear in places with convenient business environments and simplicity.

Pavel Marinechov, general manager of Alrosa, said in the spring that due to the restrictions imposed by the EU on Russian diamonds, Belgium is no longer the global diamond center.

Since January 1, 2024, the EU and the G7 have banned direct imports of Russian diamonds. Since March 1, 2024, Western countries have gradually restricted the import of Russian diamonds processed through third countries.

At the same time, diamond market participants have repeatedly complained that the new rules have caused long and expensive delays, and the new restrictions have had a negative impact on trade operations. Participants have also called for a review of the new procedures, "because these procedures could disrupt Antwerp's diamond trade that has lasted for centuries."
