The Key Minerals of the African Continent: OCP Group of Morocco to Secure $111 Million Loan from International Finance Corporation for Phosphogypsum Storage Project
¬ The International Finance Corporation (IFC) will approve a loan of €95 million to OCP Group for the construction of its phosphogypsum storage facility
¬ The project will support a phosphogypsum storage capacity of 22 million tons annually at the Jorf Lasfar Industrial Park
¬ Financing to aid expansion and help achieve fertilizer production target by 2027
The International Finance Corporation is set to approve, on May 11th, a loan of up to €95 million (approximately $111 million) to Morocco’s OCP Group. This funding will support the construction of a phosphogypsum storage facility at the Jorf Lasfar Industrial Park with an annual storage capacity of 22 million tons.
The total project cost is expected to reach €190 million, and this loan—provided in the form of corporate debt—is anticipated to cover half of the costs. Standing 60 meters high, the facility aims to help the group manage its growing phosphogypsum output from phosphate plants in a more sustainable manner.
The transaction also includes a strategic advisory component. The IFC is supporting OCP in exploring commercial applications for phosphogypsum—a byproduct long regarded as industrial waste but now gaining increasing attention due to its uses in road construction, soil treatment, rare earth extraction, and other fields.
This financing is part of the IFC’s broader effort to strengthen its support for the Moroccan group. Since 2023, the IFC has provided over €300 million in loans for solar energy, desalination, and water infrastructure projects.
For OCP Group, which is owned by the Moroccan government with a 94.12% stake, this matter goes beyond mere environmental compliance. With fertilizer production expected to rise from 12 million tons to 20 million tons by 2027, effective phosphogypsum management is crucial for expanding operations at the Jorf Lasfar plant.
