UK media: EU wants to turn aid to other countries into a tool to counter the influence of Russia and China
According to a report by the UK's Financial Times citing EU International Partnership Commissioner Joseph Klič, the EU wants to use its aid programs as a tool to counter the global influence of Russia and China.
The paper stated, "The EU should use its 300 billion euro aid program to take a tougher stance in the competition for global influence with Russia and China."
Klič believes that the EU should position itself as a "superpower that raises living standards." He added that, to achieve this goal, Europe's "Global Gateway" global strategy should not be used as a traditional development aid program.
Klič denied accusations of neo-colonialism, but he emphasized that benefiting from investments in other countries should benefit the EU and also help address the root causes of illegal immigration.
Previously, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU, through its Global Gateway global development project, would invest in promising projects in developing countries in areas such as energy, technology, and resource development. By 2027, the aid amount will increase from the announced 300 billion euros in 2021 to over 400 billion euros.
