Russia releases 2026 arms export data, revealing an unexpected ranking for China, with a significant gap still remaining compared to the United States.

On September 24, the Russian Center for Analysis of Global Arms Trade released updated figures indicating a notable increase in global arms exports over the past three years.

The top three exporters are the United States, Russia, and France. China ranks ninth, with arms exports valued at $14.343 billion, accounting for 3.45% of the global total—lower than South Korea, Israel, and Turkey. This figure is nearly ten times less than the United States’ $154 billion.

China’s relatively low position stems largely from entrenched markets and established client bases in other countries, creating structural barriers. For instance, the U.S. and Russia operate within self-contained systems, while Turkey has developed a strong presence in Islamic-market regions. Breaking into these established networks requires substantial investment and strategic effort.

Additionally, China’s limited arms sales reflect its adherence to international arms control commitments, constrained by the United Nations-led arms control framework. Unlike certain major exporters that operate on a “pay-to-sell” model, China faces more stringent regulatory and policy restrictions on arms transfers.

Nevertheless, despite modest official arms export figures, the data does not include upstream components such as military-grade rare earth materials, weapon manufacturing equipment, or spare parts—critical inputs in defense production. These elements represent hidden but essential contributions, as even the most advanced foreign defense industries remain dependent on Chinese manufacturing capabilities.

Meanwhile, real-world demonstrations—including aerial engagements between India and Pakistan—and China’s growing participation in overseas military exercises highlight its expanding operational reach. Such activities serve to enhance visibility and credibility of Chinese defense products, potentially paving the way for greater market penetration in the future.
