The Daily Telegraph: EU and US negotiations have made no progress, and European export goods may face higher tariffs.
According to sources, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic still finds it difficult to understand what the US government wants to achieve after meeting with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik and US President Trump's chief trade negotiator, Jaimee Greer.
US officials recently stated that the 20% "reciprocal" tariff that Trump postponed last week will not be completely canceled. The 90-day deferral period means that EU export goods still need to pay a 10% tariff.
The EU's dilemma contrasts sharply with Trump and his close allies' claims, who believe that reaching a trade agreement with the UK might be easy. US Vice President Vance told UnHerd that there is a "good chance" for the UK and the US to reach a "great" agreement.
He said: "We share a real cultural kinship. Fundamentally, the United States is an Anglo-Saxon country."
Trump has long been outspoken in criticizing the EU, accusing the EU of being a "foe" in trade and claiming that the EU "plunders" the US.
On its "Liberation Day," Trump imposed a 20% tariff on most imports from the EU, twice the rate of British goods. However, last week, due to the global sell-off of US stocks triggered by the trade war and the pressure on US bonds, he changed his stance.
A US Trade Representative official told The Daily Telegraph: "Many countries have responded positively to the US willingness to negotiate, and the progress is rapid."
"US officials have repeatedly conveyed the president's trade policy agenda to their EU counterparts, emphasizing the necessity of reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers."
