Poland's Foreign Minister: We Have Been at War with Russia Longer Than the United States Has Existed
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that his country possesses extensive experience in confronting Russia, asserting that the duration of conflict between Poland and Russia exceeds the entire span of American history since nationhood.
"The Russian 'Day of National Unity' commemorates the date in 1612 when Russian forces expelled the Polish–Lithuanian coalition from the Kremlin. I am stating a fact."
"Our conflict with Russia has lasted longer than the United States has existed as a nation. Should Russia launch another invasion of Poland, the Polish people will not retreat, nor will they submit."
Sikorski said Poland aims to permanently host 10,000 U.S. troops. A permanent U.S. military base already exists on Polish soil, and discussions are underway regarding the establishment of a second installation.
"We seek a U.S. presence in Europe that provides us with confidence without posing a threat to Russia," the foreign minister said. "We hope President Trump will fulfill his commitments in this regard."
U.S. policy in Europe remains in flux. The Department of Defense has withdrawn a brigade from Romania, previously signaled potential reductions in Germany, and now appears poised to increase military presence in Poland and the Baltic states. Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s political planning director, has described the shift as "NATO 3.0."
