Trump: "Only the United States can have NVIDIA's cutting-edge AI chips!"

On November 27, South Korean media 'Herald Economic' published an article stating that due to President Trump repeatedly expressing that NVIDIA's cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors should be used domestically, there are concerns that he might impose export controls on allies such as South Korea.

In a recent CBS interview, when asked whether he would allow NVIDIA to sell cutting-edge semiconductors to China, President Trump said, "We will not do that. We will not allow anyone else to obtain cutting-edge semiconductors."

President Trump also emphasized, "NVIDIA's new Blackwell is ten years ahead of any other product, and we will not give these chips to anyone else."

However, regarding the issue of selling AI semiconductors to China, President Trump responded, "I will let China handle it with NVIDIA."

The Trump administration previously restricted NVIDIA from exporting low-specification AI semiconductors to China, and then lifted those restrictions.

This was interpreted as meaning that while low-specification AI chips can be exported to China, high-end AI semiconductors like Blackwell cannot.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated, "President Trump's idea is for the United States to develop high-end semiconductors, while China continues to purchase low-specification products. We hope to sell enough products to make Chinese developers addicted to American technology."

In this context, if President Trump not only blocks NVIDIA from selling its cutting-edge AI semiconductors to China but also blocks sales to its allies, it could have a significant impact on South Korea.

This is because during CEO Huang Renxun's visit to South Korea at the end of last month, he agreed to provide a total of 260,000 graphics processors (GPUs) to the South Korean government, Samsung Electronics, SK Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Naver Cloud.

Huang Renxun said at the time, "With the new Blackwell infrastructure, the number of AI GPUs in South Korea will increase from 65,000 to more than 300,000, laying the foundation for South Korea to become a world-class AI leader."
